NHS SPECIALIST SUPPORT
SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY (SALT)
At the Russett School we have NHS Speech and Language Therapists, employed by Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), based on site. Speech and Language Therapists are health professionals who help pupils with speech, language and/or communication difficulties. Speech and Language Therapists work with parents/carers and others to assess if a pupil has speech and/or language difficulties, communication or eating and drinking difficulties. Therapists will consider the difficulties the child has and the impact these will have on his/her life.
Each therapist has an individual caseload of pupils to support, determined by the CCICP. Our staff work closely with the team of therapists across the academy, to support pupil’s communication skills. This involves assessing skills within the classroom setting, setting targets and supporting class teams to achieve these targets. Each pupil who is seen by the team will have an individual SaLT Care plan which is reviewed annually as part of a pupils Annual Review of EHCP paperwork.
As well as supporting individual pupils, academy staff and therapists work together to create a total communication environment for all. This means using objects, pictures, symbols, traffic lights signing and words in order to support and develop pupil’s understanding, expressive communication and interaction skills.

PHYSIOTHERAPY
We also work closely with NHS Physiotherapists at The Russett School to ensure that the needs of all pupils who require physiotherapy are being met. A Physiotherapist is a health professional who works to help pupils who have physical or mobility needs. Physiotherapists support pupils with problems that affect muscles, bones, the heart, circulation or lungs. They are trained to evaluate and improve movement and function of the body, with particular attention to physical mobility, balance, posture, fatigue, and pain. For pupils on their caseload, a physiotherapist may sometimes deliver physical therapies or exercise programmes or advise on the use of a variety of mobility aids and adaptive equipment. Our staff ensure that any physiotherapy care plans are integrated within the classroom, to ensure continuity of care and maximum impact for our pupils.
