Financial Support

In April 2013 the way in which schools and academies were funded for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) changed in England. All special education settings are now provided with base funding of £10,000 per ‘place’ and this is based on the number of places allocated by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). This funding comes directly from the ESFA rather than the local authority. As well as providing funding, the role of the ESFA is to regulate academies, further education and sixth-form colleges and training providers, intervening where there is risk of failure or where there is evidence of mismanagement of public funds.

In addition to the base funding, per pupil place, the local authority also provides top up funding for all pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The amount of funding varies dependednt on individual pupil need and is currently set under threee bands:

  • Band 1 – £3,691
  • Band 2 – £11,915
  • Band 3 – £15,827

The ESFA use information provided by academies on use of funding to provide a full account to the Department for Education.
